Fake news feels new, but misinformation has a long history. This course explores the shifting relationship between truth and politics through case studies from modern Chinese history, from Marco Polo to TikTok. Treating “information” as a historical concept, we examine censorship, propaganda, technology, and knowledge institutions that shape what people believe. Through diverse readings and sustained writing practice, you will not only learn more about China while growing your research skills; you will also develop critical information literacy for navigating today’s “post-truth” world.
